Interning : The Next Step To Building Your Dream Life?

Interning can often get a bad wrap, where employers take advantage of students who are in placement there to learn, get industry experience and forge their way forward in their chosen fields. It’s not all collecting dry cleaning or filing and seriously if you want a latte get your own.

We speak to our own intern Chanel Morris on what it’s like to be an intern in 2021 and how can it help you build your dream life?

If you are currently studying or looking for a pathway into your dream career, interning is your perfect next step. You might be missing that practical experience you keep seeing job applications asking for, or perhaps looking to get your foot in the door. Either way, Interning is the answer to securing that job opportunity you have been longing for!

What Is An Internship?

An internship is a supervised work experience in which you can join a business and/or organisation to gain skills and experience in your field of interest. Internships can be paid or volunteer/unpaid and are a great kick-start to your career.

The Benefits Of Interning

Interning offers you:

  • Hands on practical experience in your desired field of work
  • The opportunity to gain a professional network
  • The chance to Put the theory of your knowledge into practice
  • The potential of being hired permanently after successful completion

The times are changing. In today’s professional market, companies value practical experience as much as a degree in your resume; if not more. Industry leaders want to see that you are passionate about your role and what better way to show this than to display the amazing portfolio of proven work and success your internship can equip you with! A supporting reference in your resume from your intern boss is also a key tool to get you over the line as the ideal candidate.

With university degree fees skyrocketing and Gen Z’s transitioning their value system towards entrepreneurial skills and experience rather than tertiary study, an internship is an amazing alternative pathway for you to build your portfolio and start your dream career.

Let’s hear what our two interns at Creative Little Soul have to say about their experience…

Chanel

Joined CLS – Sept 2021

After undertaking two Bachelor’s Degrees at University I found myself full of theory, but I was missing the practical experience. I started interning at Creative Little Soul in September 2021 to put my strong passion for digital marketing to the test. In a few months of interning, I have been able to develop the skills I need, on my own terms, with the continued support of Creative Little Soul. Writing blogs, setting up ticketed events, managing websites and social media, working in a professional team, the list goes on – are all fundamental tasks that I could not have gained in University. The short time I have been here I already feel more confident and prepared for a career in this industry. The team at Creative Little Soul have been so hospitable in designating tasks that truly benefit me.

Tiffany

Joined CLS – Sept 2021

My internship journey is very recent. I started in mid-September, 2021 and am currently studying a Bachelor of Design whilst assisting Creative Little Soul with their graphics.

This experience has been super helpful with providing the experience of working amongst a professional team, highlighting the importance of communication, collaboration and implementing constructive feedback. Having a feel for what it is like to speak with clients really gives me an idea of how the design process works and flows.

This internship really gets my foot in the door of the design and marketing industry as it is giving me foundational experience and skills. I have also been able to improve my time management skills since working here. Everyone at Creative Little Soul has been really supportive of my creative design journey especially Clare, our senior graphic designer who has been giving me tips and tricks to be a quick and efficient graphic designer whilst also producing work of a professional, high standard.
