Q&A with Creative Little Soul’s London-based Social Media & Marketing Assistant
Creative Little Soul (CLS) is an award-winning digital and creative marketing agency. We provide business support and creative services such as content creation, digital marketing strategies and design for our clients in the hospitality industry.
From humble beginnings, Chrissy Symeonakis established Creative Little Soul in 2013. Fast forward seven years and CLS is now a sizeable team, with each staff member bringing a wealth of talent into business. This in turn, serves our wonderfully varied client portfolio.
Today we would like to introduce you to our first London-based team member, Creative Little Soul’s Socials Media & Marketing Assistant, Lucy Greenwell.
Tell us a little about your role at Creative Little Soul and what you will be doing?
Hello! I am excited to be assisting with all things marketing and socials, plus helping grow into the UK market with solutions and support.
What did you do prior to your current role at CLS?
I have been a Marketing and PR freelancer on and off for a couple of years now for a handful of flourishing clients in the hospitality, health and wellness industries. My clients have ranged from vegan skincare brands to London brunch cafes. I love the variety.
You completed a BA (Hons) Public Relations & Communications Degree in 2017 and achieving a First Class Honours. This is quite an accomplishment. What made you choose to study this subject?
Two of my siblings were in the digital marketing landscape which definitely opened my eyes to the industry and made me want to get involved as soon as I could! My passion for all things comms and digital ignited properly when I started working at Disney HQ during my Uni course – it was amazing seeing our strategies have impact on a global scale.
Tell us about some of your noteworthy career moments
Some of my most noteworthy career moments definitely come from working at Disney! Meeting the cast of Star Wars at a charity event for Star Wars: Fashion Finds The Force ahead of the launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was so surreal. I also played a big role in the execution of a Minnie Mouse x Georgia May Jagger event for London Fashion Week.
Lastly, I worked on a mental health campaign at an agency in Manchester called Float Festival: Manchester’s First Wellness festival. This was a highlight for me because it’s a social cause I am hugely passionate about!
What is your preferred social media platform and why?
Instagram. I just love how visual it is and how you can be really creative when curating a brand’s feed, or of course your own. It’s also a great way to research different companies via hashtags, and actually how I found CLS!!
What do you love/not love about social media?
I love how you can be really creative with your feed. You can tell your story in a variety of ways, whether it’s helpful reels, valuable captions or beautiful images. I really love that you can connect with people all around the world from different walks of life, countries and backgrounds who have the same interests as you or follow similar accounts, it’s really cool!
I dislike that social media has taken a turn into a popularity contest and is so far from reality now in terms of ‘highlight reels’. We are all guilty of doing this and only posting things we want people to see or believe about us. This is absolutely fine and we should remember social media is there to be enjoyed and used freely, but it’s SO important to remember not everything you see is reality – and comparison to other people’s lives is so bad for our wellbeing. A digital detox is always needed sometimes for a little break and the chance to ground yourself and come back to the present moment.
How do you stay motivated, particularly as you work remotely?
For me, I have to get up early and go for a walk with a coffee in my local park (Brockwell Park, it’s my favourite park in London!) or around Brixton which is where I live. Regardless of the British weather, I feel like it really wakes me up and helps get me energised for the working day ahead. When I skip my walk, I find I feel super lethargic.
What do you like to do in your downtime?
In my downtime, I absolutely love practicing yoga. I also really like cooking nourishing food that makes me feel great! I hang out with my housemates a lot too, we usually watch films or a Netflix doc in the evenings.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would have to say Bali. I spent a few months there and it honestly has been drawing me back ever since. I was supposed to go back there this year but Covid happened, so fingers crossed for next year. I’m in love with the culture, people and nature there. After Bali, I would say Australia – I spent Christmas there last year and it was the best time!
Just for fun: cats or dogs?
AHHH, can I say both?! How can I choose between kittens and puppies!
Any advice you might give to others who are considering a career in PR, communications or marketing?
I would say keep up to date with the latest industry and technology trends. The digital age is ever-expanding and changing all the time, so it’s vital to be ready when the next big thing emerges, for example TikTok or even virtual reality – it’s good to analyse trends from a PR and comms perspective. Then, I would say try to get as much experience as you possibly can when starting out. I’m all for reaching out to people directly because if you don’t ask you don’t get, and it shows you are proactive and confident in your abilities – and I think that means a lot to people 🙂
On welcoming Lucy to the team, Chrissy said “I am very fortunate to have such an incredible existing network, support and team around me who are all amazing. Feeling seriously grateful because our hard work has paid off, even though at times this year has been a real prick, we just kept pushing on! Proud of my team!”
