Ketchup with Friends| Sydney Tomato Festival

Botanically a fruit, but classified as a berry, the tomato is an indispensable part of our lives and enjoyed the world over. From salads to sauces, pizza to pastas, the tomato has become a versatile staple in the diet of many.

The Tomato Festival Sydney  (yes this is a “thing”) celebrates the humble tomato through tomato-inspired lunches, Relish Café & Bar pop-up, talks, workshops, cooking demonstrations, tours, children’s activities, produce stalls, tastings and more. Held in the Royal Botanic Garden’s in Sydney, this years event is getting a spicy kick. Held from  20-21 February 2016 bigger and with a chilli theme this 2 day event is going to bring the goods..

New additions to the Festival Village this year include:

  • D’VineRipe Longest Tomato Lunch
  • A brief history of the tomato and its closest relatives, by the Garden’s Paul Nicholson.
  • Insightful cooking demonstrations with well-known Sydney chefs.
  • Indigenous education through Bush Tucker talks and didgeridoo workshops.
  • Free guided walks – From our Garden to the Table led by Volunteer Guides who will broaden your knowledge of the plants that are edible, both the common and the more unusual.
  • Vegetable mandala display – 5m in diameter.
  • Aztec inspired children’s activities trail including tomato throwing!

Yes people, you read right there will be tomato’s thrown!! The gardens also celebrate their 200th birthday too. We wonder if there is will be cake for everyone of the tomato variety?

So if you’re a love of all things red and delicious, ketchup with friends at this unique and creative event. Most events are free, but there are a few ticketed ones too.
