Are you aware of the way you consume social media? Living in tech-heavy and fast-paced times, we can’t stress how important it is to review your social media usage. Mama once told us you become a sum of what you eat, read, listen to and watch. All the more reason to check yourself before you check your notifications.
Consuming a variety of media is awesome, both online and offline, but if you find your inner voice scolding you for eating fries at lunch, or that sneaky imposter syndrome creeps in when you see your colleagues smashing their side hustles online, it might be time to rethink how you use social media. What about the influencer you knew from high school promoting skinny tea, or the loved-up couple jet setting around the world and documenting every inch of their perfect lives?
As we scroll our social feeds aimlessly, any of the above scenarios can become painfully familiar, and what we don’t realise is the impact this can have on our mental health. If this strikes a chord, then it’s time to detoxify your feed and cut the comparison crap.
Just because others are showing off the shinier parts of their lives doesn’t mean you aren’t smashing your 2021 goals. We need to remember that social media is the tip of the iceberg, where no one feels obliged to share the not-so-great parts of their lives. There is room for everyone at the table, so keep doing your thing and focus on yourself.
5 ways to detoxify your social media feed
- Unfollow toxic accounts. You are in control of what accounts you are consuming, maybe it’s time for a cleanse of who you are following and engaging with.
- Take time away from your screens. Leave your phone upstairs. Put it on Do Not Disturb for a few hours a day and see how your screen time lowers.
- Follow inspiring, uplifting and empowering accounts that make you feel fabulous.
- Set a self timer on your most used apps. This is awesome for limiting your screen time so you can focus on individual tasks and increase your overall productivity.
- Delete social media apps from your phone altogether. Deleting social media apps means you won’t be distracted by notifications. When you do choose to check your socials via your device or computer, it will be on your terms.
